Major doctor R.S Rao after his service from the army began his career in private practice in the small town of Coimbatore. Armed with a plethora of medical degrees from UK ranging from Surgery, medicine ,test medicine and even dermatology. He Started the Sreerama krishna nursing home in the compound of his house in R.S Puram. The quality of medical attention resulted in more patients, necessitating shifting to a bigger premises at periyasamy road, RS puram. It was soon Renamed Rao Hospital. Major doctor Rao was bold and accomplished surgeon.
His hospital soon became a formal reference centre of excellence for general surgery. He dealt with deliveries and performed general neuro and even cardiacs surgeries all with his limited Infrastructure.
As a founder trustee of the sankara eye care movement he championed the cost and spontaneously offer his hospital premises where several corneal transplant done initially
He was also a great motivator for the professionals who worked with him. dr. J G Shanmugha nadhan start the ganga hospital, dr Sankara Narayanan set up the Rasi hospital . The Rao family has been in medical service for the past four generations .The late Dr. Rao was trained in UK and set as Chief medical officer to the cochin state in the 20’s.
He was the 1st physician to the royal family . His son mejor Dr. rs Rao established the rao hospital and serve the people of coimbatore from the 50’s. All the three sons of dr.R.S Rao also perceived medicine the torch is now being carried by S.R Rao belonging to the third generation from 70’s. His wife dr Asha Rao A gold medalist in medicine field from the mysore university took specialization in micro surrogacy and laparoscopic surgery at Belgium , Germany and UK and soon joined the hospital together they greatly expanded the reach of the Institution.
Dr. Dr.S.R. Rao MS says that “ It is my hope that the net bearer of the torch will further expand the services of this hospital to meet every single need of every women. regardless of claim or creed rich or poor.”
The fourth generation of doctors Dr. Archana a gold medalist from Coimbatore medical college who has completed her MRCOG from London and dr. Dhamodhar R Rao who has completed his MD which soon start that service.
The rao family is closest and committed to that cost where members support each other both personal and professional life.

Dr. S.R Rao Establish the laparoscopic unit in the hospital in 1976 which was first of it’s kind in tamil nadu. A self trained surgeon he fine tuned the arc with his training at Belgium, and Germany he has performed hysterectomy removal of fibroids and tubal blocks laparoscopically much became they come on place. The hospital is soon became known focus on assisted reproduction the micro surrogacy and fertility units were established as earlier in 1985. Hysteroscopic surgery are make the form in 1990. the first gift baby and the first IVF baby of Coimbatore where born in this hospital in 1997 . The first ICSI baby of the city was born in this hospital in 1999 and the first
vitrification baby was born in 2008, Today the hospital is FOGSI recognised training centre for Infertility and advanced training centre for gynec endoscopy.
