IVF is done to treat cases of infertility or when natural fertilisation might cause genetic problems in the child. IVF is known to be effective in women above 40 years as well. IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation is the most popular technique of Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART).
IVF Procedure
The procedure of In Vitro Fertilization involves the coupling of egg and sperm outside the body. The process involves collection of egg and sperm from the woman and man through special techniques. In women, medications are given to stimulate the production of eggs. These are then removed through a minor surgery.
The collected egg and sperm are analysed for quality and the best are combined together in a lab in environmentally controlled chamber. After fertilization takes place, it is implanted in the womb which later develops as pregnancy. In case of sperm irregularities or failure in fertilisation, methods such as ICSI are used.

- Antibodies issues that harms sperm or eggs
- Low sperm survival rates in cervical mucus
In IVF more than one embryo are transferred into the uterus. This ensures better success rates for conception. Hence the probability for multiple births is high in IVF.
